Pathogen identification

The disease can be detected based on the presence of fruiting bodies or basidiomata or sporophore of the Ganoderma on the palm bole or roots.

Isolation of Ganoderma

The diseased tissue is directly placed onto the medium without the need for surface sterilisation. A brown halo around the colony indicates the presence of Ganoderma on the GSM.

Collecting field samples of infected stem/trunk, roots or fruiting body of Ganoderma

Plating samples onto the GSM and incubation at 28ºC for 5-8 days. With GSM, washing and sterilisation of the diseased tissues become unnecessary and transfer of the samples could also be done in the field

The presence of Ganoderma is confirmed with a brown halo. The white mycelium is then transferred to potato dextrose agar (PDA)

Oil palm is the major commodity crop for Malaysia. It is important to ensure its sustainability by improving yield as well as protecting the crop from pest and diseases.

The implementation of The Malaysian Oil Palm Industry Biosecurity Plan will be our first step in protecting and preventing invasive pests, diseases or weeds from entering our country, thus securing the future of the oil palm industry in Malaysia.
