EMBIO™ actinoPLUS

MPOB in collaboration with Pascal Biotech Sdn. Bhd., Shah Alam, Selangor, successfully produced EMBIO™ actinoPLUS for controlling and preventing of Ganoderma disease in oil palm.

This product contains a soil actinomycete, Streptomyces nigrogriseolus (namely as Streptomyces GanoSA1), prepared in vermiculite and biocharcoal.

The Streptomyces GanoSA1 has been found to be strongly antagonistic against Ganoderma disease through laboratory and nursery studies. Streptomyces GanoSA1 colonises the soil rhizosphere of oil palm roots and does no harm to the host plant. It was also found to assist in improving oil palm crop performance against Ganoderma disease. Based on the nursery testing, the product significantly reduced the infection of Ganoderma disease in oil palm seedlings (65.2%).

Field testing of the EMBIOTM actinoPLUS to control Ganoderma disease was investigated through seedling baiting technique inTeluk Intan, Perak. After a 36 months, only 6.6% dead palms due to Ganoderma infection were observed on seedlings treated with EMBIOTM actinoPLUS. About 75.0% (45 out of 60 palms) of the untreated seedlings (as control) were dead due to Ganoderma infection. Dead palms were confirmed to be Ganoderma infected using the Ganoderma selective medium (GSM).

Oil palm is the major commodity crop for Malaysia. It is important to ensure its sustainability by improving yield as well as protecting the crop from pest and diseases.

The implementation of The Malaysian Oil Palm Industry Biosecurity Plan will be our first step in protecting and preventing invasive pests, diseases or weeds from entering our country, thus securing the future of the oil palm industry in Malaysia.
